  1. Is there a fee to get a Certification letter from the Comptroller’s Office?

    There are no fees charged by the Comptroller’s office to get a certification letter.

  2. Is there an expiration date on my Certification Letter?

    Yes, the Certification letter is only good for 12 months.

  3. After obtaining my certification can I immediately go to MVA or is there a wait period?

    No you cannot go immediately to the MVA; you will need to wait 24 hours prior to making an appointment with the MVA.

  4. As a dependent what does the taxpayer (parent or guardian) have to do in order for me to get my certification?

    Nothing, we are not providing any information from any parents or guardians tax records. We are only certifying that you were claimed as a dependent on a tax return for the relevant tax year(s).

  5. Do I have to use an organization/company/individual to assist me to obtain a certification letter?

    No, you can apply on-line or make an appointment with the Comptrollers office and we will assist you free of charge.

  6. How do I go about obtaining an individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN)?

  7. Will an organization/company/individual that assists me to obtain an ITIN charge a fee for the service?

    They might and there is little control over this, however, you can call and visit the IRS and they will assist you in obtaining an ITIN at no charge.   8. How long does it take to obtain an ITIN?

    The application process is through the IRS and generally takes 4 to 8 weeks.
